Statement of intent
Polstead Preschool is committed to protecting children, staff and volunteers from the harmful effects of the sun. We recognise that young children’s skin is delicate and that sunburn in early childhood increases the risk of skin damage in later life. Outdoor play is an important part of every session, so we take sensible steps to make sure children can enjoy it safely.
Aim
We aim to ensure that every child is protected from sun damage while continuing to enjoy daily outdoor play, and that children begin to learn simple habits that keep them safe in the sun.
Methods
Shade. Shaded areas are always available in the garden, using trees, canopies and parasols. Children are encouraged to play in the shade during the hottest part of the day, and quieter activities such as story time and drawing are set up in shaded spots.
Hats and clothing. From April to September we ask parents and carers to send children with a named sun hat, ideally one that covers the ears and neck. We keep a small supply of spare hats for children who arrive without one. Loose, cool clothing that covers the shoulders is recommended on sunny days.
Sunscreen. We ask that children arrive with sun cream of at least SPF 30 already applied at home. Written permission is obtained from parents and carers for staff to reapply sun cream during the session, and this is recorded on the child’s registration form. Children are encouraged to help apply their own cream, with staff support, as part of learning to look after themselves.
Timing of outdoor play. On very sunny days we limit time in direct sunlight between 11am and 3pm, when the sun is strongest, and plan longer outdoor sessions for earlier or later in the day.
Drinking water. Fresh drinking water is available indoors and outdoors at all times, and children are reminded to drink regularly in warm weather.
Staff and volunteers. All adults wear hats and sun cream outdoors so that children see sun safety being modelled. Staff watch for signs of overheating, sunburn or dehydration and act promptly, informing parents and carers of any concerns at collection time.
Working with parents and carers. We remind families of this policy at the start of the summer term and share sun safety information on our noticeboard. We welcome conversations about any particular needs a child may have, including skin conditions, allergies or medication that increases sensitivity to sunlight.
Very hot weather. During a heatwave we keep the building cool and well ventilated, offer water play and other cooling activities, and may adjust the routine of the session. Parents and carers will be contacted if a child becomes unwell in the heat.
Adoption
This policy was adopted at a meeting of Polstead Preschool Oxford. Signed on behalf of the Management Committee. Adopted August 2026 and reviewed annually.
